A general contractor is a party that hires subcontractors who then in turn hire employees to perform labor under the original agreement. If the general contractor exerts sufficient control over the subcontractor, the law treats the subcontractor as an agent of the general contractor, thereby bringing the laborers within workers’ compensation coverage as employees of the general contractor.
